Wood Or Metal? Which Swing Set Is Right For Your Children?
When choosing which type of swing set is right for you, there are many options available and it is important to do your research before making any purchases. The most common question people have about choosing swing sets is whether it best to have a Wooden Swing Set or a metal swing set. Several years ago, there would be no debate at all. It was metal or nothing. But with recent advancements, wood treatments have made it much more feasible to construct play sets out of wood. In the end, it really just boils down to personal preference, but there are a few key things one may consider before making a purchase.
What type of structures do you want included with your swing set?
Slides, ladders, forts, monkey bars and more can call be included with your swing set depending on your particular needs as far as space restrictions and age appropriateness. It is typically easier to customize a Wooden Swing Set, while their metal counterparts are usually have fewer options available.
Does the appearance of the swing set need to match any other furniture or structures?
Some prefer a Wooden Swing Set because it has a rustic look to it and will blend in nicely with trees and other shrubbery. If you live in a rural area then you might not want the pastoral scenery to be interrupted by a metallic structure in your backyard.
Will you be responsible for maintaining your swing set?
Both wooden and metal swing sets need to be properly maintained with regular service and the appropriate weather treatments. While metal is susceptible to rust, wood could crack or splinter creating a dangerous environment for your children. Both materials must be treated with a special type of coating to protect your play equipment from the elements.
How much do you want to spend on your swing set?
For some, money is no object and will spend any amount on play sets for their children. For others, the price tag will be the deciding factor in their purchase. Wooden sets tend to be cheaper than metal ones, but often times there is a lot assembly required. If you do have the proper tools or are not particularly handy, then you may want to hire a professional to help with the installation. It is very important that the structure be sound and sturdy because it will be holding precious cargo: your children!
Before installing your swing set, whether you choose wood or metal, make sure you take all the necessary safety precautions. There are a number of factors such as size, location, and adult supervision that you must take into account. I will discuss these further in my next article. Remember: Safety first! Have fun.

Learn hand eye coordination on the playground
Video games are often blamed for much of the inactivity of today’s young people. The argument is that instead of going outside to play they are stuck sitting in front of a television or computer. It is crucial for growing children to maintain healthy, active lifestyles and learn social interaction skills and that are difficult to achieve when one is cooped up indoors all the time. The makers of these time consuming video game products would have you believe that the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks of the sedentary lifestyle that goes along with consistent gaming. The biggest benefit would be the development of hand eye coordination. One must push buttons and control the directional pad to make the characters on the screen move appropriately. Timing is crucial and one must have a good reaction time to be successful. Problem solving skills are also involved in playing some these complex computer games.
These benefits may be present but there is no way you can convince me that playing video games develops more important skills than actual physical activity. Remember when you learned to pump your legs and propel your body on the Swing Sets at the park without having someone push you? That requires a great deal of coordination and that cannot be taught with any joystick or remote control. Some of the newer gaming consoles have incorporated wireless controls and movement sensing technology that emulates some physical activities like golf and tennis. It does get the player to get up off the couch, but it does not replace the need to go outside and enjoy the fresh air and the feel of an actual racket or club. Swing Sets are not the only pieces of playground equipment that build coordination. See saws and merry go rounds also help children with their dexterity as well as team work.

Escaping the dangers of hazardous household products
Keep your kids out of trouble can be a full time job all by itself. From the time they learn to crawl it seems like their little hands seems to find all the things that you want them to stay away from. There are services you can call that will help you baby proof your home. Safety latches can be affixed to cupboards and drawers so little ones will not find dangerous utensils or harmful chemicals. Sometimes parents choose to install gates in door jams and hallways to keep small children out of restricted areas and all of these do help to alleviate some of the dangers, but there is another way to keep the kids safe.
The best defense against the dangers that reside inside of the home is to keep the children outdoors! I do not mean to suggest that you have your offspring live in the backyard with the dogs, but if there are things like Swing Sets, jungle gyms and other enticing play equipment outside then chances are you will have an easier time convincing them that they should go out and play instead looking for things to do inside. It is part of a kid’s nature to be mischievous to a certain extent, but it fuels the fire when you tell them not to touch this or that or stay out of certain area of the house. Having fun activities in place out of doors will do wonders in helping to curb that natural instinct to get into things they aren’t supposed to. When they are very young you worry that they will get under the sink and find hazardous chemicals thinking they are toys. They get a little older and taller then it the drawers in the kitchen become potentially dangerous. It is important to educate your children about the dangers of household items, but it can also be helpful to lure them outside with fun things to do like swinging on the Swing Set.

Smart ways to save money while spending time with your kids
Spending time with your children doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. It would be well over $50 to take a family of 4 to the movie theater and share a large bucket of popcorn. Amusement parks can be fun but they are extremely pricey and once you pay the price of admission there is still something at every corner coaxing your hard earned dollars out of your wallet. Not to mention everyone has got to be fed at some point. Most any recreation venue that has employees charges money to enjoy the facilities. Whether it be miniature golf, a day at the zoo, or an afternoon in the arcade, these types of activities are a drain on the family budget and should be reserved for special occasions.
The current state of the economy has created a widespread consciousness of money and value and most of us are doing everything we can to hang on to the dollars that we’ve got. One great way to save money is to spend time with your kids at the park. They can have fun playing on the jungle gym, swinging on the Swing Sets, and enjoying all the other playground equipment at no cost to you! Just because money is tight, that doesn’t mean you should stop spending time with your children and enjoying fun activities with one another. The park isn’t just a place for mothers and toddlers to spend their mornings, it can be a valuable resource for any frugal parent or guardian. How many times have you driven by a playground or walked past a park and noticed the empty Swing Sets sitting there idle with no passengers? There is probably someone out spending unnecessary cash on some toy, game or activity that will most likely prove to be a cheap thrill at the end of the day. Have some fun in the sun and spend a day at the park.

Outdoor games for grade school children
Grade was fun and exciting for two reasons: recess and lunch time! Sure teachers can make the act of learning enjoyable with various activities and engaging lesson plans, but nothing inside the classroom can match the level of exhilaration that children feel on the playground. The fun does not necessarily depend on the presence of large, expensive jungle gyms and playground equipment, for there are many games that can be played that require little more than a few lines drawn on the pavement.
Hop scotch, for example, is an age old classic that involves skipping and hopping from one square to the next following different patterns and trying to complete the course quicker than the last person and preferably with more style and grace. Hide and seek is another popular playground game that can be played without any mandatory equipment. Children can utilize any existing structures like Swing Sets or jungle gyms or even trees and bushes to hide themselves from the seeker charged with locating all the other players. Red light green light is fun activity that small to medium groups of children can play during recess time. One person is chosen to be the stoplight and the others line up a certain distance away and only move when the stoplight says the words ‘green light’. All must stop when they hear ‘red light’ and the first person to reach the stoplight person is the winner and gets to be the stoplight for the next round.
Swing Sets are great fun for grade school children, but the capacity is limited; only a few kids are able to ride at a given time. That is why is great to be able to incorporate other outdoor activities into recreation time so everyone has something to do as opposed to just standing around awaiting their turn on the Swings.

Beware of overcrowded daycare centers
It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child but in today’s modern American society where two incomes are required to make ends meet and the ideal family unit is comprised of a mother, father and two kids, this notion is often lost. As young adults we are in such a rush to get out of the house and move away from our parents, not realizing that later on in life, they will be the ones that we call on for help taking care of our children (their grandchildren), help with finances and so on.
Too often working parents will leave their young children in the care of overcrowded and under qualified child care facilities because they need to go to work. It is understandable that one has to make a living, but not at the expense of quality care for your children. Recently there have been families that have received national attention for having huge additions to their family. Twins, sextuplets, octuplets and the list goes on. Unless you are a freak of nature, chances are you’ve only got two arms, so how does one care for so many young children? It is crucial to have a reliable network of family, friends and church members that can assist in taking care of the children. Without such a support group, it is nearly impossible to get anything done in a day.
If you are in a position where you have to rely on outside childcare, be sure that they are an accredited institution and that all their employees are certified and properly trained. It is also a good idea to inspect all of their Daycare Supplies to ensure they are in good condition and good working order. That way you can feel comfortable knowing that your children are in a clean and safe environment while you are out making a living.

Toddler Swings are safer than regular swings but still require adult supervision
When choosing the right swing for your toddler, consider all the safety features before making a purchase. A Toddler Swing is specifically made for children 3 years of age or under. These swings include a full harness that provides support on all sides and is not just a plastic seat from which a small child can easily fall. When installing the swing, be sure that it hangs at least two feet up off the ground so the toddler can reach up and climb into the swing unassisted. A rope is safer than a metal chain, but some of the chains are covered with a plastic coating to prevent and injury from pinching. You should check the equipment regularly for damage such as protruding screws or other things that little ones may hurt themselves with.
Adult supervision is a must when it comes to Toddler Swings and other playground equipment, even if it is age appropriate. Be sure the kids follow basic safety rules and always use the equipment for its intended purpose only. Do not allow them to stand up in the swing or kneel in such a way that their legs are not properly fitted into the harness. It is also important to position the swing set so that other children are not tempted to run through the path of those swinging as a collision could easily occur. Toddler Swings are specifically designed to only hold one child at a time so do not let more than one child attempt to ride at the same time. These types of swings are only meant for small children but that does not mean that are exempt from the safety rules that will keep them from getting injured on the playground. Think of time spent on toddler play equipment as a sort of training ground for when the kids are old enough to play on the big kids’ equipment.

Modern Tire Swings are much more fun than the old rubber versions
Swinging is fun for children for a great many reasons. That feeling of flying through the air with your own leg pumping and nothing but self-propulsion pushing you closer to the heavens is very memorable for most young children. Tire Swings have come a long way since they were invented. The original version was fashioned from an old worn out tire that was no longer suitable for the road. It was tied to a sturdy tree branch with some rope and could hold one rider at a time. Those days are long gone! Today’s swings are much more sophisticated and are capable of much, much more.
The old, single rider version was perpendicular to the ground, doubling as a target for throwing a baseball through. Inside the tire was a hollow space where the inner tube used to be it was not the most comfortable surface on which to sit, not to mention the fact that it would collect water, debris, and whatever else might crawl or fly its way into the old tire. Modern Tire Swings are actually manufactured with swinging in mind and are not meant for driving purposes at all. Made from a smooth plastic polymer, today’s swings are much more comfortable and sturdy and there is no old black rubber to smear all over the kids’ clothes. And instead of a rope, there are three chains connected to a swivel, allowing the swing to hang parallel to the ground and accommodate up to three riders instead of just one. The swivel design provides total freedom of movement, so you can swing in all 360 degrees instead of just back and forth. Having 3 kids on the swing as opposed to just one creates a much more dynamic swinging experience that involves teamwork and cooperation. Swingset.com has best selection of Tire Swings and they come in a variety of colors.

Promote regular physical activity and healthy exercise with a Swing Set
Inspire more healthy and safe exercise for your children with fun activities they can do in the comfort of your own back yard. With so much entertainment technology to keep young people indoors all the time, it isn’t surprising that the number of obese children keeps rising. The impact on one’s health is quite concerning and should not be taken lightly. There have been increased instance of kids being diagnosed with diabetes along with all the undiagnosed cases that are getting worse as the months go by. A great way to ensure that your young ones are getting plenty of exercise is to install a Swing Set at your house. Not only will the equipment provide an endless source of dynamic exercise and an imaginative play experience for your kids and their friends, but it will also foster a healthy exercise routine that will keep growing bodies active and fit.
Many grade school children are unable to meet basic standards for physical fitness and in most cases the educators are not to blame. Some question the current scholastic benchmarks and argue that standardized testing is biased toward specific cultures and certain socioeconomic groups. This may be true in many classrooms across America, but every school yard, field, and playground hold the same opportunities for growth and development. Some facilities will have better recreation equipment than others of course, but the benefits of regular outdoor activity are undeniable. More emphasis should be placed on physical education for the simple fact that a healthy mind and body go hand in hand. To teach and enrich one without the other is to do a disservice to the child as well as their education. A Swing Set and a few daylight hours is a necessary supplement to the rigorous studies and social interactions of elementary school.
